Do you want to feel smarter? React faster? Minimize the effects of aging?

For most people, the answer is a big yes. That’s why they turn to brain supplements.

You’ve probably heard the term before, but what exactly are brain supplements? Do they even work, or is it just a buzzword?

The answer is a bit more complex than a simple yes or no.

What Are Brain Supplements

Brain supplements are cognitive enhancers for brain health. Essentially they are brain vitamins. Much like you may take a vitamin to supplement your diet, a brain supplement may fill in the gaps in your diet, promoting a healthy brain.

It should be noted that supplements are not reviewed for effectiveness or safety. However, supplements often do contain ingredients that have been proven to have benefits. An example is folic acid, which is a B vitamin used to make new cells.

Just be wary of supplements that promise outrageous claims, cures, or suggest they are better than a prescription. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Brain supplements may also be referred to as nootropics.

Pros and Cons of Brain Boosters

Should you take a brain supplement?

Brain supplements are widely available, so finding them isn’t hard. Many sites offer a variety of supplements for sale, making these products easy and convenient to purchase.

A brain balance supplement can aid you with eliminating brain fog and helping you focus. While some of these issues such as brain fog can be hard to quantify, that doesn’t mean they can’t be detrimental to your health.

However, supplements aren’t without their drawbacks. It’s important to remember that brain supplements are not a cure-all pill, contrary to what some may believe.

In order for them to be effective, you may need to take them for several weeks. If you go in expecting a miracle, you’re going to be disappointed.

Like any supplement, they may interact with over-the-counter or prescription medication. Some supplements may also have unlisted ingredients, which can further complicate interactions with other medicines. Always talk to your doctor if you notice a cognitive decline in yourself or a loved one.

If you already live a healthy lifestyle and eat a balanced diet, supplements may be unnecessary. This also means they may be expensive, especially if you take multiple supplements over time.

As with any medicine, always make sure to follow the directions. Do not exceed the recommended dosage. If you have any questions or concerns about supplements, talk to your doctor.

Brain Supplements as Part of a Healthy Lifestyle

Brain supplements shouldn’t be a substitute for an overall healthy and balanced life. You should still eat a healthy diet, practice good sleep hygiene, stay physically active, and take care of any existing health conditions. Cognitive supplements won’t be a substitute for an otherwise unhealthy lifestyle, so make sure to prioritize other aspects of your health.
