Early Life
Amancio Ortega Gaona was born on March 28, 1936, in Busdongo de Arbas, Leon, Spain. His parents were Antonio Ortega Rodriguez and Josefa Gaona Hernandez. He spent most of his childhood in Leon but when he turned 14, he moved to A Coruna after leaving school. Shortly after moving, Amancio was able to work as a shop hand for Gala, a local maker of shirts. Through this job, he was able to learn how to make clothes manually.

Career
Amancio Ortega founded the Confecciones Goa, a company that sells quilted bathrobes, in 1972. Three years after, he opened the first Zara shop with his first wife, Rosalia Mera. In 2009, Zara became a chain of the Inditex Group, which Amancio owns 59.29% of it. This large enterprise has more than 6,000 stores and includes famous brands, such as Bershka, Pull and Bear, Stradivarius, Tempe, Kiddy’s Class, Zara, Oysho, Massimo Dutti, and Zara Home. Inditex Group houses over 92,000 employees.
In 2011, Amancio announced that he is retiring from Inditex Group and stated that the then Inditex VP, Pablo Isla, will take his place. The next year, he donated €20 million to a Catholic relief organization named Caritas Internationalis.
Apart from owning a huge clothing line, Amancio is also the owner of Epic Residences and Hotel in Florida as well as the Torre Picasso in Madrid.
