Early Life

Amancio Ortega Gaona was born on March 28, 1936, in Busdongo de Arbas, Leon, Spain. His parents were Antonio Ortega Rodriguez and Josefa Gaona Hernandez. He spent most of his childhood in Leon but when he turned 14, he moved to A Coruna after leaving school. Shortly after moving, Amancio was able to work as a shop hand for Gala, a local maker of shirts. Through this job, he was able to learn how to make clothes manually.

In 2009, Zara became a chain of the Inditex Group, which Amancio owns 59.29% of it. This large enterprise has more than 6,000 stores and includes famous brands, such as Bershka, Pull and Bear, Stradivarius, Tempe, Kiddy’s Class, Zara, Oysho, Massimo Dutti, and Zara Home. Inditex Group houses over 92,000 employees.
