When the film Call Me By Your Name was released in 2017, the world was reminded of what it feels like to be young, miserable, and in love.
The film was directed by Luca Guadagnino, and it was a success as it earned several acknowledgments through awards including ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’ in the Oscars. He also shared that he is already working on a sequel and has teased some details about it.
From then on, many fans and critics are getting excited about the upcoming sequel and what could be the story that awaits Oliver and Elio.
The First Film Recap
To have a better understanding of what to expect in the movie sequel, let us have a brief recap of the first movie.
The story started in the summer of 1983, where there is a young, bold, and intelligent, 17-year-old boy named Elio Perlman, who is spending wonderful days with his family in Lombard, Italy. There he met Oliver, who is a charming doctoral archaeology student and is working for Elio’s father as an intern. His father invited Oliver to live with them during the summer to help out with the academic papers. As they enjoy the days of summer, Oliver and Elio have both appreciated the wonders of an awakening desire that would change their lives forever.
Elio is an enthusiastic young man but a little bit of an introvert. He initially thought that he and Oliver had only a few things in common. While Oliver is a carefree and confident person, Elio usually spends his time playing the piano, reading books, and going out with his childhood friends Marzia and Chiara.
It is a unique type of romance that brought Elio and Oliver together, but as the summer comes to an end, Oliver needs to go back home to the U.S. This event has brought sadness for the two. Elio’s parents have kept secret that they are aware of the relationship the two has though they never addressed it openly, they suggested that the two of them should visit the Bergamo. There they spent three romantic days before Oliver went home.
Both being apart during the Hanukkah, Oliver made a call to Elio’s parents to inform them that he is engaged and to be wed. This made Elio upset and called Oliver by his name and Oliver did same, both talked and mentioned that he will never forget all the memories they have. After the call, we see Elio sitting down near the fireplace, staring blankly in the fire, while remembering the moments he had with Oliver, tearfully, while his parents and everyone in the house prepares for the festival dinner.
CMBYN 2: Plot
The first film ended where Elio deals with Oliver’s engagement. Director Guadagnino already made a few details about the sequel’s plot and will be in five or six years after, timeline. Making the sequel in an 80s setting. He also shared some of the grand scenes that he wants to be shown in the movie.
Following the novel ‘Find Me’, the timeline was set 10 years after they have separated. So we can not really tell how Guadagnino will move the story of the film.
One of the era’s topics that the director confirmed is the AIDS crisis. It will take a major part of the story. Other world events during that time will most likely include the rise of Silvio Berlusconi in Italy and the Gulf War.
The director admitted that the first film was only an introduction to the characters and story, telling that he had planned to tell it in full for 5 movies.
The sequel will still be in north Italy setting. But, Guadagnino also made a promise to his actors that they will travel the world.
CMBYN 2: Cast & Crew
We can expect to see the same cast on the movie sequel. It is unlikely for movie series to portray different actors on the same character. Director Guadagnino also stated that the whole cast of the first film will be returning.
Lead actors and role will most likely be played by the same person. Armie Hammer as Oliver, Timothee Chalamet as Elio, Victoire Du Bois as Chiara, Esther Garrel as Marzia, Michael Stuhlbarg as Samuel Perlman, and Amira Casar as Annella Perlman.
Looking at the first film, both Armie Hammer and Tiothee Chalamet really had an emotional and enjoyable time shooting the film.
Because of that production and actors balanced relationship, it is sure to a sequel. In addition, Guadagnino’s frequent actress Dakota Johnson, who has acted several of his movies will surely make an appearance on the new film. In fact, the director wants her to play the role of Oliver’s wife.

The film director, Luca Guadagnino was not secretive about having the sequel and the initial timeline of the movi release was supposed to be in 2020. As many fans await the second film, there has not been a word of it, and six months have already passed the year.
Actor and star of the film Armie Hammer was a bit more held back about the release of the film and if it would be happening soon. He also shared a statement that the cast of the sequel might need to have more years to meet the age of the characters.
As of now, there has been no official statements that pertains to the production and release of Call Me By Your Name 2.
