Dennis Keith Rodman was born on May 13, 1961, in Trenton, New Jersey. His father is Philander Rodman, Jr. and his mother is named Shirley. He has two sisters, Kim and Debra. His father was a member of the Air Force and fought during the Vietnam War. His father later left them and moved to the Philippines. According to Dennis, he has many half-brothers and half-sisters on his father’s side.
When his father left, his mother was forced to work numerous jobs simultaneously to support their family. For Dennis, he does not consider Philander as his father and just someone who brought him in this world.
According to him, his mother was closer to his sisters and he felt “overwhelmed” in their household since he was the only male. Back then, his sisters were far more talented than him when it comes to basketball. Both Kim and Debra became All-Americans at Stephen F. Austin and Louisiana Tech. With the Lady Techsters team, Debra even won two national titles.
Dennis went to South Oaf Cliff High School, where he was a gym student of Gary Blair, who would become the coach of the Texas A&M Basketball team. Blair was also the coach of Dennis’s sisters. Unfortunately, he was not considered someone who would stand out. Also, he was only 5’6’’ when he was in high school, so he did not qualify for the football team as well. This left him feeling greatly devastated.
After graduating high school, he worked as a janitor at the Dallas Airport. At this time, he suddenly grew, from 5’6’’ to 5’11’’. Because of this, he decided to give basketball another try. He had a family friend who helped him get in the Cooke County College. There, he was doing well when it comes to basketball but did miserably in his academics. He then transferred to Southeastern Oklahoma University, where he was a three-time All-American at NAIA.
He joined a summer youth camp where he became friends with Byrne Rich. They became inseparable that he was even close to the Rich Family. Rodman considered them as his adopted family. However, in 2013, they were not in speaking terms due to unknown reasons.
Dennis Rodman started dating Annie Bakes in 1987 and both had a daughter named Alexis Caitlyn in 1988. The two got married in September 1992. However, they got a divorce just 82 days after their wedding for abuse accusations and infidelities.
In November 1998, Rodman and Carmen Electra got married. After nine days, Rodman filed for an annulment but the two reconciled. A year later, Carmen finally filed for divorce. Just shortly after his divorce with Electra, Rodman met Michelle Moyer. They got married in 2003 during Rodman’s birthday and together, they have two children, Dennis Jr. and Trinity.
In 2004, Michelle filed for divorce but the couple tried to fix their marriage for several years. They were officially divorced in 2012.
Rodman is known to be a very versatile player. While playing for Detroit, he was a small forward and his main task was to neutralize the best player of the opposing team. Due to his versatility, he was able to guard centers, forwards, etc. However, he was not good when it comes to free shooting and playing offense.
All in all, Dennis Rodman had played in 14 seasons. These include 911 games, 6,683 points, and 11,954 rebounds. NBA.com considers him as one of the best rebounding forward in the history of the NBA. He is also one of the most recognized athletes in the world. However, he was also viewed as individualistic and enigmatic.
In his entire professional basketball career, he has played for five teams – Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, San Antonio Spurs, and Detroit Pistons.
