Denzel Hayes Washington, Jr. was born on December 28, 1954, in Mount Vernon, New York, to parents Denzel, Sr. and Lennis. His father worked at the New York City Water Department and was a Pentecostal minister. Meanwhile, his mother was the owner of a beauty parlor.
Until 1968, Denzel went to Pennington-Grimes Elementary School. His parents got divorced when he was only fourteen years old. His mother then sent him to the Oakland Military in New York.
After that, he went to Mainland High School in Florida in 1970 and studied there for a year. In 1977, he graduated from Fordham University and earned a BA in Drama and Journalism. While attending college, he joined the school’s basketball team as their guard.
In June 1985. Denzel met Pauletta Pearson on the set of the TV film, Wilma, which was also his first work on screen. They married afterward and have four children together – twins Olivia and Malcolm, Katia, and John David, who is a former football player and actor.
