Early Life

Joseph Hames Rogan was born on August 11, 1967, in Newark New Jersey. His parents got a divorce when he was only five. According to Rogan, he has not been in contact with his father since he was seven and all he remembered about him is domestic violence. However, he made it clear that he does not hate his father and does not want to complain about his childhood. When he was seven, his family lived in San Francisco, CA up until he was 11. Then, he and his family moved again to Gainesville, Fl.

When he was in high school, his family moved to Boston, and there, he attended and graduated from Newton South High School.

Learning Martial Arts

During his teenager years, Rogan played in the Little League Basketball and developed a growing interest in martial arts. He remembered being always terrified and young when he was a child and martial arts allowed him to be stronger, braver, and have a better perception of who he really is.

Rogan took up Karate when he was 14 and moved to taekwondo a year later. Five years later, he was the champion of the US Open Championship Taekwondo Tournament. He also took up kickboxing later on.

He went to the University of Massachusettes but did not finish college. He lived in Boston until he was 24 years old and eventually moved to New York.

In 2009, Joe Rogan and Jessica Ditzel got married. Ditzel used to work as a cocktail waitress. The couple has two daughters and Rogan is a stepfather to his wife’s daughter from a past relationship. They used to live in Boulder, CO but moved to Bell Canyon, CA after Rogan bought a $5 million home in 2018.

Rogan does not have any political affiliations but considers himself “pretty liberal.” He has openly supported women’s rights, gay rights, gay marriage, universal health care, and recreational drug use.

In a 2019 episode of his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, he shared that he and the vocalist of My Chemical Romance, Gerard Way, are cousins but the two never met.

Stand-up Comedy

At first, Joe Rogan was not interested in being a stand-up comedian as his main interest was in martial arts. However, his parents took him with them one day to see a movie by Richard Pryors titled Sunset Trip. He laughed most of the time while watching and really enjoyed the film. When he was training, he will crack jokes at the gym and people find him really funny. That’s why they encouraged Rogan to give stand-up comedy a shot.

It was in 1988 that he had his first experience as a stand-up comedian. He performed at Stitches, a comedy bar in Boston. Aside from being a comedian, Rogan also worked as a limousine driver, construction worker, martial arts trainer, and even as a newspaper carrier. 

His breakthrough as a comedian happened when he performed on MTV’s Half Hour Comedy Hour, which helped him land a job at Disney Network.

Later on, he will debut his acting career by appearing in Fox’s Hardball. From 1995 to 1999, he was a regular of NBC’s NewsRadio.

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Rogan worked as a post-fight interviewer at the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) from 1997 to 1999. From 2002 to 2016, he became a color commentator.

Fear Factor

In 2001, he accepted the offer of being the host of Fear Factor. He declined at first but later on agreed as he believed that this project will help increase his exposure. The show ran from 2001 to 2006.
