Knights of Sidonia, also known as Hepburn: Shidonia no Kishi in Japan is a popular mecha manga series that has been brought to life by Tsutomu Nihei. The story revolves around Nagate Tanikaze, who is an “under-dweller”. He desires to and is destined to become a Garde pilot. His purpose in life is to defend the starship Sidonia against an alien species that intends to invade it, named Gauna. The series has been produced by Polygon Pictures and has had two of its seasons released till now. Anime fans and fans of the series have been delightedly waiting for the release of its season 3. However, there has been no official announcement made about the third season’s release date.

Knights of Sidonia is a mech manga belonging to the genre of Mecha, and space opera. Like most Japanese anime, this one is also based on a Manga that was written by Tsutomu Nihei, and published by Kodansha. The publishers for its English version were ‘Vertical’ and the imprints of the Manga were provided by Afternoon KC. It even featured in the ‘Afternoon magazine’. The Manga had 15 volumes that were released between April 25, 2009 – September 25, 2015. 

The anime series based on this Manga has had three of its seasons released. The first season was Directed by Kōbun Shizuno and the second season was directed by Hiroyuki Seshita. The anime was written by Sadayuki Murai and its background score was given by Noriyuki Asakura. The Polygon Pictures studio was involved in its production and it was Licensed by Sentai Filmworks and Animatsu Entertainment. The series was originally aired on MBS, TBS, CBC, BS-TBS, AT-X, and its English version was aired on SEA and Aniplus Asia. The first season ran from April 11, 2014 – June 26, 20, and had 24 episodes.

A film made on this Manga was helmed by Kōbun Shizuno and written by Sadayuki Murai. Its music was given by Noriyuki Asakura and the studio involved in its production was Polygon Pictures. The second season premiered on March 6, 2015. 

Another film based on the same manga was helmed by Hiroyuki Seshita and Tadahiro Yoshihira. It was written by Sadayuki Murai and Tetsuya Yamada. The music was given by Shūji Katayama

Knights of Sidonia is a mecha manga written by Tsutomu Nihei who is known for his work in Blame! And Biomega which is a great representation of his potential. The story revolves around Nagate Tanikaze, an “under-dweller” and his comrades who are quite the last remnants of humanity trying to save themselves at the large ship  – “Sidonia” in a hopeless fight against the monstrous shapeshifting alien race –  The Gauna.

Nagate is destined to become a Garde Pilot and constantly tries to save himself and his comrades while fighting the Gauna as the story continues. Sidonia is defended by large mechanized weapons called Gardes that are mobilized by the power of “Higgs Particles” which also have several more combat weapons such as high output cannons for long-range and “Kabikaze” which is a special spear that is used for short-range combat. 

The Manga ran from April 25, 2009, to 25th September 2015 and contains a total of 15 volumes that are all available in English. The manga had an anime television adaptation aired between 2014 and 2015 which was produced by polygon pictures. The most recent of all the related releases was the anime film sequel entitled: Knights Of Sidonia: Ai Tsugumu Hoshi that premiered on 4th June 2021. 


The character of Mozuku Kunato has been voiced by Ayane Sakura. The character of Nagate Tanikaze has been voiced by Ryōta Ōsaka. Mozuku Kunato and Nagate Tanikaze are the protagonists of the story. The character of Izana Shinatose has been voiced by Aki Toyosaki. The character of Yuhata Midorikawa has been voiced by Hisako Kanemoto.

The character of Eiko Yamano has been voiced by Nanako Mori. The character of Captain Kobayashi has been voiced by Sayaka Ohara.

The character of Samari Ittan has been voiced by Atsuko Tanaka. The character of Ochiai has been voiced by Takehito Koyasu. The character of Ichiro Seii has been voiced by Tomohiro Tsuboi. Season 1 and season 2 had a total of 24 episodes. The first episode was named “Commencement”. The episodes that followed it were named “Oblivion”, “Glory”, “Choice”, “Adrift”, “Salutations”, “Resolve”, “Immortality”, “Empathy”, “Decisions”, “Collision” and “Home”. The first season premiered on 10 April 2014 and its last episode was aired on 27 June 2014. 

The episodes of the second season of the series were Conflict, Ability, Course, Rage, Engage, Rumbling, Reunion, Mission, Entry, Encounter, and Battle. The second season of the series premiered on 10 April 2015 and its last episode was aired on 26 June 2015. The same year the makers of the series released a film on the Manga on March 6, 2015. Six years after the release of this film, they recently released another film on June 4, 2021.

When will the third season be released?

A few years ago, news surfaced around the internet about the third season of Knights of Sidonia and that the makers were working on it. The latest developments have hinted that the third season of the series shall focus on the 12 to 14 chapters of the Manga. Since season three has been in its production stage since 2017, we can expect its release anytime soon.
