Early Life

Bill K. Kapri, famously known as Kodak Black, was born on June 11, 1997, in Pompano Beach, US. His mother is Marcelene Octave, a Haitian immigrant. Kodak’s original name was Dieuson Octave, but he later changed it to Bill Kapri. Marcelene raised Kodak at a public housing project in Pompano.

While still in elementary, Kodak already began to rap and started going to a local rap house to record his music after school. To enhance his vocabulary, he spent a lot of his time reading dictionaries and thesauruses. However, he also often spent trespassing properties with his peers as well as getting into brawls.

When he was in fifth grade, he got expelled due to fighting and in middle school, he was arrested for stealing a vehicle.

When he was six, he started to use the nickname Black and changed later on to Lil Black. When he joined Instagram, he changed it again to Kodak Black, which stuck and became his stage name.

Kodak announced in 2014 that he was working on completing his high school diploma at Blanche Ely High School. While incarcerated, he started to identify himself as a Hebrew Israelite after studying scriptures with a priest. 

Later, he filed to change his name to Bill Kahan Blanco. Kahan was believed to be another spelling for kohen, a Judaism term for priests who have descended from the prophet Aaron. In May 2018, his name was legally changed to Bill K. Kapri. After a month, he earned his GED while serving his time in jail.

Philanthropy

Kodak became a philanthropist and donated $10,000 to the Jack and Jill Children’s Center, an organization that supports early education. In November 2018, Kodak announced that he was going to build a school in Haiti. A month after, he again donated money to Paradise Childcare to give gifts to 150 kids. Apart from that, he also gave the organization $5,000 for its Christmas party.

Furthermore, he donated $2,500 to Terrence Carraway, a South Carolinian police officer who was killed during a shootout. He also donated $12,500 to Paige Cook, who was aiming for giving out notebooks and pencils to more than 7,000 students in the Cleburne Independent School District. It is also believed that Kodak donated about $50,000 to the son of the late rapper XXXTentacion, Gekyume.

Early Beginnings

At the young age of 12, Kodak joined the rap group, Brutal Youngnz, with J-Black as his stage name. Shortly after, he joined another rap group, The Kolyons. In 2013, he released his first mixtape titled Project Baby. A year after, he released another mixtape called Heart of the Projects. In 2015, he released his third mixtape titled Institution.

Breakthrough and Success

Kodak was featured in Lockjaw, one of the famous singles of French Montana in his mixtape’s MC4, in  May 2016. Three months after, his single titled Skrt reached the #10 spot in Billboard’s Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Chart.

In June 2016, Kodak launched his fourth mixtape titled Lil B.I.G Pac. While in jail, he released the single Can I. In February 2017, he launched another single titled Tunnel Vision, which debuted at the #27 spot and reached #6 later on. A month after, he released his first single titled Painting Pictures, which reached the #3 spot in the Billboard 200. It also sold about 71,000 copies on its first week of release.

In December 2018, Kodak launched his second studio album called Dying to Live, which was a huge success for its single titled Zeze. Other songs in the album include Take One, If I’m Lyin’, I’m Flyin’, and Calling My Spirit. Many of his songs feature other famous rappers, such as Offset, Travis Scott, Lil Pump, and Juice WRLD.
