When Carter was 2 years old, his parents divorced and his father abandoned him permanently. However, Carter has a stepfather named Reginald “Rabbit” McDonald who he considers as his actual father.

Carter attended Lafayette Elementary School in the gifted program. Then, he later enrolled at Eleanor McMain Secondary School for 2 years. Carter was an honor student. He was also a member of the drama club.

Later on, he enrolled at Marion Abramson Senior High School. However, he focused on his music career. That is why he dropped out at age 14.

At 8 years old, Carter already wrote his first rap song. He met Bryan “Birdman” Williams, co-founder of Cash Money Records, in the summer of 1991. Williams mentored Carter and encouraged his talent for hip-hop.

Williams involved Carter on a couple of Cash Money Tracks. Oftentimes, Carter would record freestyle raps on the answering machine of Williams.

At age 12, Carter suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest in 1994. The shot almost ended his life. According to him, it was an accident. However, after several years, Carter stated that he tried to kill himself after his mother told him that he has to end his rap career.

Carter praises Robert Hoobler, an off-duty police officer, for saving his life by insisting the dying kid be driven right away to the hospital in a police car instead of waiting for an ambulance. Carter called Hoobler “Uncle Bob”. According to other reports, there are a couple of other officers who played a role in determining and implementing that course of action.

Carter’s stepfather, Reginald McDonald, was kidnapped from a nightclub on July 20, 1997. He was found dead with gunshot wounds.

At age 14, Carter was the youngest member to join the Hot Boys in 1997 together with rappers Turk, B.G., and Juvenile.

The group had major success in the hip-hop industry. However, the group disbanded a couple of years later.

At the age of 17, Carter released his debut solo album called Tha Block is Hot. The album features major contributions from the Hot Boys. Later on, the RIAA certified the album as Platinum. This album also helped Carter become a nominee for “Best New Artist” in 1999.

In 2004, everything changed for Carter when he released an album called “Tha Carter”. A year later, he released another album called “Tha Carter II”. During this period, Carter’s career changed a lot.

However, the next 2 years are quite unproductive for Carter. However, he did feature on several tracks by other rappers. This includes Ludacris, Wyclef Jean, and Fat Joe.
