Loren was born and brought up in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He attended Milburn High School in New Jersey. Later, he studied at the Manhattan School of Music. Then he graduated from Princeton University with a degree in chemistry. Then he studied P.h.D and Doctorate in Medicine from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Then he completed his fellowship in paediatric haematology-oncology at Dana-Farber and Boston Children’s Hospital.

She is the faculty of Harvard Medical School since 2001. She worked as a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and has served as the chief of the division of infectious disease at Massachusetts General Hospital. She has worked on the project of HIV in South Africa. She served as the chair of the National Institute of Health from 2014 to 2015. She has also worked on COVID-19 and she was a strong opponent of the Great Barrington Declaration. Later, President Joe Biden appointed her as the director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2020.

Loren married Rochelle Bersoff in 1995. She is also a physician-scientist and is of Jewish descent. They together have three sons and are happily living in Newton, Massachusetts.
