Early Life
Morgan Freeman was born on June 1, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee, to parents Morgan Portfield Freeman and Mayme Edna. His father was a barber who passed away in 1961 due to cirrhosis. Meanwhile, his mother was a teacher who passed away in 2000. He has three other siblings and came from African ancestry.
While he was still an infant, Freeman was sent to his grandparents and while growing up, he had to move often. He first went to Charleston, Mississipi, then to Greenwood, Mississipi, and Gary, Indiana, and finally settled in Chicago, Illinois.
He was only nine when he began acting. At 12, he was the winner of a drama competition. He went to Broad Street High School and graduated there in 1955. When he was 16, he suffered severely from pneumonia and almost died from the sickness.
Wanting to be enlisted in the United States Air Force, Freeman turned down a scholarship offered by Jackson State University. When he was at the Air Force, he worked as an automatic tracking radar repairman. After serving four years in the military, he went to LA and took acting lessons. At the same time, he worked as a transcript clerk at the LA City College to make ends meet.

While he was young, he has two children outside of his marriage and Alfonso Freeman is one of them. In October 1967, he married Jeanette Adair Bradshaw. The couple ended their relationship in November 1979.
A few years later, he met Myrna Colley-Lee and married her in June 1984. The two got separated in 2007 with their divorce finalized in 2010. While they were still together, Morgan and Myrna adopted Morgan’s step-granddaughter, E’dena Hines, and raised her together. Sadly, Hines was murdered in New York. She was 33 years old.
In 2004, Freeman was one of the people who formed the Grenada Relief Fund to help people who were affected by Hurricane Ivan.

After moving to Los Angeles, Morgan took acting and dancing lessons as he was motivated to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. After completing his classes, he joined a theatre group and worked with a touring company.
