Robert John Downey, Jr. was born on April 4, 1965, in Manhattan, New York City. His parents are Robert Downey, Sr. and Elsie Ann, both of which also work in the movie industry. His father was also a famous filmmaker and actor, while his mother was an actress who often starred in Robert, Sr.’s films. The original family name of his father was Elias but was changed when he enlisted in the army. Robert has one older sister named Allyson and both of them grew up together in Greenwich Village.
When he was young, his father was a drug addict and he mostly grew up being surrounded by drugs. Even when he was only six, his father permitted him to use marijuana, an event his father strongly regretted doing. Later on, Robert will admit that using drugs became an emotional bond with his father. As a result, Robert started to spend his nights pursuing drugs and abusing alcohol.

Their marriage collapsed as a result of Downey’s repeated trips to jail and rehab. In 2001, Falconer reached a breaking point and left Downey, taking their son with her. Their divorce was finalized on April 26, 2004.
In 2003, he met Susan Levin during the set of Gothika. She is the Executive Vice President of Silver Pictures. At first, Susan was not interested in Robert after he showed her his interests.
