His father was also a famous filmmaker and actor, while his mother was an actress who often starred in Robert, Sr.’s films. The original family name of his father was Elias but was changed when he enlisted in the army. Robert has one older sister named Allyson and both of them grew up together in Greenwich Village.

When he was young, his father was a drug addict and he mostly grew up being surrounded by drugs. Even when he was only six, his father permitted him to use marijuana, an event his father strongly regretted doing. Their divorce was finalized on April 26, 2004.
