Tarek El Moussa is the leading actor of HGTV’s famous reality TV series “Flip or Flop” that started in 2013 along with his ex-wife Christina Haack. Tarek established his name as a real estate broker in Orange County, California when he got his real estate license at 21 years old. 

Tarek was an expert in terms of selling houses. Not just normal houses but multi-million dollar mansions. He was able to make deals with enormous houses and sell them like a piece of cake. However, when the housing business started to turn tides, he opted to pick interest with real estate. As a broker, he found interest in making business with distressed properties. 

Finding a buyer for a property near foreclosure or under the bank’s custody didn’t hold him back. He became an expert in real estate with hundreds of legitimate transactions. With the help of his ex-wife Christina, the couple was able to make hundreds of deals under their names. 

Their expertise in the field of flipping distressed properties made them venture into the reality series “Flip or Flop.” The two will look for distressed properties and renovate them. After making adjustments, they will sell the property at a reasonable price.

Tarek also hosts the series “Flipping 101 With Tarek El Moussa” on HGTV. He helps those who want to be house renovators and gives them tips about house flipping. With more or less 300 property deals, Tarek El Moussa’s name is a hot-seat in the world of real estate broking. 

Early Life

Born on August 21, 1981, in Long Beach, California, Tarek El Moussa is a half Middle-Eastern with Arab and European lineage. Tarek’s father was raised in Lebanon (who later on moved to Egypt) while his mom is from Belgium. As a teen, his father traveled to Europe and married his mom. 

While in Orange County, California, Tarek became a famous house flipper and real estate broker. His expertise is looking for auctioned homes and properties and selling them after improvement. Having his license in real estate at the age of 21, Tarek aced in dealing with multi-million dollar mansions. As the real estate business collapsed in 2008, Tarek began his buy-and-sell business.

Tarek met Christina Haack in the field of real estate broking and later on married her in 2009 and had two children, Brayden James, and Taylor Reese.

Ladder to Success

In 2011, Tarek and Christina decided to have their house flipping filmed. They sent the documentary to various networks and caught the attention of HGTV and Pie Town Productions. After signing a contract with HGTV in 2012, Tarek and Christina premiered their first episode of the reality show “Flip or Flop” in April 2013. 

The show is about the process of how Tarek and Christina look for auctioned houses and buy them after bidding. The two will renovate the property and sell them again at a good price. Tarek does the structure improvement while Christina looks over the design and timetable. They were able to make seven seasons and film 92 episodes from 2013-2017. The show was loved by fans and made the power couple famous. 

HGTV announced in 2020 a new show, “Flipping 101 With Tarek Moussa” where Tarek was the host. Novice house flippers were mentored by Taarek by sharing his secrets as a flipping guru. His show was a success and still loved by many despite being the sole host after they broke up with Christina in 2018. 

Battling Cancer

Tarek El Moussa was diagnosed with cancer in 2013 after Ryan Reade, a nurse and die-hard fan of Tarek’s show, wrote to the production company about noticing a lump on Tarek’s neck. It turned out that Tarek had thyroid cancer and testicular cancer.

Tarek was thankful to Ryan because it saved him from further complications. The early diagnosis prompted him to seek medical treatment the soonest. Tarek made a statement on HGTV about how grateful he was for Ryan’s keen observation. 

Getting Divorced

To everybody’s surprise, Tarek and Christina split up in May 2016. The two separated after an argument that led to the calling of the police when Tarek was reported to be becoming suicidal after he left home. Tarek made a statement that he just went out for a walk while bringing a gun for self-defense against wild animals. 

The two decided to file for divorce in 2017 and it was finalized in January 2018. The fate of The El Moussa Group, their co-owned real estate agency, and their show almost broke apart. However, the two still managed to film succeeding episodes even after the divorce. They maintained their social relationship and managed their parenting responsibilities. Their real estate agency was later dissolved and rebranded as “Tarek and Associates.”

Following the divorce, Tarek decided to move from another property that he bought after they split up with his ex-wife. He is now with Heather Young, a model and real estate agent from Los Angeles who works for the Oppenheim Group.


For the first two seasons, Tarek and Christina were able to earn $10,000 each episode. They accumulated about $130,000 for the first seasons. As season three started, the couple’s salary was increased to $40,000 per episode. This dramatically increased their income per season to $600,000, excluding their sales on their own business.
