He was born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on 16th February 1990.

The Weeknd was the sole kid of Makkonen and Samra Tesfaye, who have Ethiopian origin. Abel grew up in Scarborough, Toronto.

After the separation of his parents while a child, he moved to live with his grandmother. His stay with his grannie led to him learning Amharic. Tesfaye opened up about his father in an interview. He said that he rarely got the chance to see his dad.

He goes ahead to say that he saw him twice. At the same time, he was 6 and 11/12 years old. Abel also said that the dad was a cool guy and will never judge him.
