Early Life

Tony Robbins’ birth name was Anthony J. Mahavoric, the eldest among three children. He was born on February 29, 1960, in North Hollywood, California. Robbins’ parents got divorced while he was still seven. His mother had many husbands until she met the former semi-professional baseball player Jim Robbins. When the young Anthony reached twelve, he was legally adopted by Jim and carried the family name Robbins.

Robbins was diagnosed with a pituitary tumor when he was in high school and grew about 10 inches on his growth spurt. Because of their abusive and chaotic household, Robbins decided to leave and never returned. He became a janitor to support his needs and was never able to attend college.

At the age of seventeen, the young Robbins already started to work for Jim Rohn, a famous author, and motivational speaker. Robbins is in charge of promoting Rohn’s seminars and gathering audiences. With his experience working with Rohn, Robbins learned to practice Ericksonian hypnosis and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) in the 1980s. Robbins worked with John Grinder, a co-founder of NLP who used his knowledge during his seminars. Reportedly, Robbins mastered the art of firewalking and used it during his seminars.

Robbins’ first self-help program “Personal Power” was produced by Guthy Renker in 1988. The infomercial caught the attention of many people and made Robbins popular. Going forward to 1997, Robbins hosted his first Leadership Academy seminar which lasted for more than two decades up to date.

Robbins made ties with Washington Wizards co-owner Ted Leonsis and Golden State Warriors co-owner Peter Guber and later made business with eSports. The three bought “Team Liquid,” a professional gaming organization, and engaged in a tournament for Dota 2 in 2017. The team won “The International 7” with a prize of over $24 million.

Using his expertise in self-help and motivation, Robbins had the opportunity to work with famous individuals. Robbins became a life coach for Mandalay Chairman and CEO Peter Guber, the same person who owns Golden State Warriors. One day, as Tonny visited Guber, he received a phone call from former American president Bill Clinton. Clinton asked Robbins to help him deal with his problem about the economic crisis and later the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

Robbins also helped famous football player Justin Tuck unload his baggage in dealing with his nightmares as a football superstar. Not only that, but he also helped the eight-time tennis grand slam champion, Andre Agassi, with the frustrations of his recovering wrist. Robbins also had the chance to meet Serena Williams, another tennis champion who suffered from multiple injuries because of sports and depression.

Tony Robbins was also invited to the Emmy award-winning series “Super Soul Sunday” hosted by Oprah Winfrey. During his interview, Robbins shared his insights about the reasons why people fail. He gave his thoughts about how someone becomes successful because of optimism.

Robbins also became the life coach of wealth manager Paul Tudor Jones who has been his client for more than 25 years since 1993. The two communicate every day through email and allocate 1-2 hours of one-on-one sessions quarterly. Jones reportedly pays a million dollars annually to Robbins. He referred to him as a therapist, trainer, and adviser.

Actor Hugh Jackman also attended one of Robbins’ seminars, “Unleash the Power Within” and shared his experience. In an interview, Jackman said that if you continue to live your life under the constraints of your fears and doubts, you will never become successful. The ability to set up and overcome your problems is key in achieving success. Everything is all in the mind.

The American rapper Armando Christian Perez, also known as “Pitbull,” also sought counsel from Tony Robbins. In their session titled “Self-Made Success,” they talked about using your setbacks as motivation for success. The world-renowned musician shared his thoughts about wealth and money. Nothing of these matters if you don’t find happiness with what you are doing.
